PILATES

Pilates, originally named “Contrology,” was created by Joseph Hubertus Pilates in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Fascinated with the human body, he created unique apparatuses and exercises to strengthen, stretch, and improve the human body. Pilates continued his work into his 80s and passed his legacy of exercise onto his favorite pupil and protégé, Romana Kyrzanowska. Kyrzanowska passed her unique knowledge of not only the exercises, but the human body onto a select few privileged teachers including her daughter and granddaughter, who today operate Romana’s Pilates, an organization devoted to the education of Pilates, or Contrology, the way Joseph Pilates taught it.

THE EXERCISE

When properly executed, Pilates strengthens and stretches the muscles of the body, but heavily focuses on the core musculature, that is, that muscles that move and stabilize the trunk of the body. These lesser known muscles are where most people are weakest and unaware. Attention to precision of movement and proper form during the exercises, keeps these muscles operating symmetrically and in a balanced fashion. The result is an even and toned musculature, improved joint function, improved posture, and prevention of joint wear and tear, or as Joe would say, “It’s good for the body!”

THE BENEFITS- CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY

Joseph Pilates has a famous quote, “In ten sessions, you will feel the difference. In twenty sessions, you will see the difference. In thirty sessions, you will have a new body!” To see these benefits, Pilates should be done at least three times a week. Repetition of the exercises creates muscle memory and is crucial to developing new and improved muscle and postural habits. Not all “days” need to be under the eye of an instructor, in fact, homework is a NECESSITY and ENCOURAGED! NORFOLK PILATES is set up to offer multiple ways to obtain your three days (even more) with private sessions, duet sessions, group classes, independent workout, and personal/home Pilates program development.

NORFOLK PILATES TEACHERS

Catherine Dodd, owner/instructor, moved to Norfolk in 2001 for her Master’s degree in Exercise Science at Old Dominion University. After finishing her degree, she began working in Fitness Facility Management and private training. A long time runner and having completed multiple marathons, Catherine was noticing some bothersome physical issues that had presented themselves far too early in her life. Pilates was the solution for these problems and became her next professional path. In 2004, Catherine moved to New York City to apprentice with Romana Kyrzanowska and Sari Mejia-Santo, her daughter. Since then, Catherine has been teaching Pilates and helping others with developing healthier bodies that feel better. Catherine maintains a strong relationship with those who mentored her through her Pilates journey by continually travelling and attending workshops, sessions, and conferences with the Romana’s Pilates family. Catherine’s rare combination of a Master’s of Science degree in exercise physiology with a direct lineage to the purest roots of Pilates has helped her strengthen, rehabilitate and improve bodies of all abilities, sizes, and ages.

Jessica Desai finished at Old Dominion University with a degree in Oceanography and a minor in Dance. While working on her minor, she began her work with Pilates under the direction of Kathryn Finny at Pilates @ TR Dance. After college graduation, she pursued her Classical Pilates Certification through an apprenticeship program and continues to further her studies of the method. For Jessica, Pilates carved a path of mental, emotional and physical health and stability. With this motivation, Jessica spreads the work of Joseph Pilates to all those with a desire to make a change.
